An Opportunity to Write Your Future!

woman journaling new years resolution

“We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.” - Edith Lovejoy Pierce

It’s the dawning of a new year. Another year has come and gone…I don’t know how many of you are in the same boat as me this time of the year, pondering what my new year’s resolution(s) should be. This year, I decided to do something different and I ask you all to join me.

Step 1:

Give yourself a quiet space and time to reflect on the past year whether it’s one minute or one hour. Through reflection, you learn and gain wisdom.

Step 2:

Write down your top 3 (whether personal or professional) accomplishments in the past year. You may have had many accomplishments in the year so you really have to reflect and choose the TOP 3. Feel free to elaborate on why you chose these 3 accomplishments.

Step 3:

Develop your top 3 goals (whether personal or professional) for the next 5 years.

Step 4:

Then write a letter to your future self (5 years older). What do you want to say to your future self? What lessons (wisdom) do you want to pass on to yourself? How do you see yourself in 5 years from now? OR Write a letter to your child(ren) 5 years older. What lessons and wisdom do you want to pass on to your children? What future do you envision for your children?

Step 5:

Then put the letter away and keep it safe to open 5 years from now. Here’s an OPPORTUNITY to write your future!
