Smoke Point: 338°F

When oil begins to smoke it starts to break down, the process is called thermal oxidation. The smoke indicates that carcinogens are being released into the air and free radicals are forming in the oil. Oil that begins to smoke should ideally be discarded and replaced with fresh oil for optimal health and taste. Beware of highly processed supermarket oils. They are made with a long shelf life in mind, rather than considerations of dietary health. Know your fats!

  • Polyunsaturated Fats: These fats include omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs. Every cell, tissue, gland, and organ is dependent upon the presence of EFAs. They are the main structural components of every cell membrane, are necessary for cell growth and division, and regulate cell activities.
  • Monounsaturated Fats: The Mediterranean diet has long been known for its healthful benefits. Cardiovascular health and cholesterol regulation are often attributed to monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acids.
  • Saturated Fats: Do you know the difference between long-, short-, and medium-chain fatty acids? Long-chain fatty acids from animals are often harmful because they can cause arteries to become clogged. Short-chain and medium-chain fatty acids, which come from plant oils, support good health and are used for energy by our bodies.
  • Trans Fats: Consumption of trans-fatty acids should be avoided. They are created by a chemical process called hydrogenation. Through this process, fats are created that are more shelf stable. However, it is nearly impossible for our bodies to digest them. Read labels carefully and avoid products with ingredient lists that include hydrogenated vegetable oils or hydrogenated fats.

Out of Stock? Sad to see!

I've loved this oil for years. Best plant source of omega 3, hands down, and I've tried many. Evening primrose comes close but this is more sustainable by far. I HOPE it's still sustainable. . . but it was discontinued by Vitacost and now Flora's website doesn't even have it anymore? I REALLY hope this 'sustainable' product really is/was sustainable. . . When will it be restocked if it's supposedly so sustainable???

Hello A,
Thank you for your loyalty! We're happy to hear how much you have enjoyed our Sacha Inchi Oil and that it has fit your needs so well. We are truly sorry to hear about your disappointment with the product's availability.
Rest assured, availability issues are not a result of unsustainability in an environmental sense. We are very proud of the way sacha inchi cultivation supports Indigenous Peruvians and provides safe, non-toxic, climate-friendly local employment.
The difficulty is that not so many US brokers have been ordering it for chain stores, and fewer people have been buying the product, which limits our options. As it stands, the oil is not sustainable for us in the financial sense and we are looking to discontinue it. We appreciate your understanding.
All the best

Great extra calories for backpacking!

I mainly brought this product for backpacking. Both my dog and I need the extra calories during thru-hikes to keep the weight on, and this has been a great option to keep the weight and bulk of my backpack down a bit (I know this isn't a pet product that probably can't be recommended by Flora, but after some research I found out the oil is good for dogs). It's also nice to get in some healthy fats and nutrients, as much of the food I eat on the trail isn't as nutritionally dense as I normally eat.
