While a well-planned vegan diet can be nourishing, it comes with nutritional blind spots that are easy to overlook, particularly for people new to plant-based eating or who haven't taken a close look at their nutrient intake in a while.
Several vitamins and minerals are absent from plant foods entirely, or they are present in forms that are harder for the body to absorb. Vitamin B12 is the best-known example because it's found almost exclusively in animal products.
Vitamin D3 presents a similar challenge, particularly for people in northern climates with limited sun exposure. And iron from plant sources is less bioavailable than heme iron from meat. Vegans often need to be more deliberate about both their intake and its form.
Omega-3 fatty acids are another consideration. ALA is found in flaxseed and walnuts. However, conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA forms can vary from person to person, so those following a vegan diet may wish for a direct source of algae-based EPA and DHA.
As a vegan, you may have to supplement smartly by choosing vitamins and supplements from a brand that takes ingredient quality, bioavailability, and honest formulation as seriously as you take your lifestyle choices.
Flora Health has been producing plant-based supplements since 1965, long before "vegan" became a mainstream label. Every product in this collection is free from animal products and animal-derived ingredients, certified where applicable, and formulated to the same strict standards that have defined Flora for six decades.
Our Flora Health vegan collection has been put together for everyone following this diet, including those looking for a vegan multivitamin or targeted vegan vitamins to fill specific nutritional gaps.
The Nutritional Gaps Every Vegan Should Know About
The best way to support your body is to understand where a vegan diet is most likely to fall short, and build a supplement routine that actually matches your nutritional gaps.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is non-negotiable for vegans. The body needs it for red blood cells, a healthy brain, and DNA synthesis. Since a vegan diet can’t deliver vitamin B12 in a reliable way from plant foods, a good vegan multivitamin will include B12. Low stomach acid and low calcium levels play a role, as do form and dosage, so read the label carefully.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is technically produced by the body through sun exposure, but most people, vegan or not, don't get enough sun to maintain their vitamin D levels year-round. Vitamin D also requires fat for absorption, and its activation in the kidneys depends on adequate levels of magnesium. If you follow a vegan diet, make sure to get vitamin D3, the active form of vitamin D, and that your vitamin D source is vegan. Since 90-99% of all vitamin D3 is sourced from sheep's wool, some vegan-friendly vitamins include only the inferior D2 version.
Iron
Iron deserves special attention for vegans, particularly women. Plant-based iron is absorbed less efficiently than the iron found in animal foods, and plant-based diets are full of absorption inhibitors. Also, iron absorption can be hampered by some plant compounds, so most plant-based eaters tend to be deficient. The solution isn't just to take more iron; it's to take the right form in the right way.
Omega-3 fatty acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are the most frequently overlooked gap in vegan nutrition. Vegans often have a low intake of healthy fats, especially of EPA, EFAs, and DHA. These omega-3 fatty acids, most closely associated with cardiovascular health and brain function, are found in meaningful quantities almost exclusively in marine sources. A direct algae-based vegan omega-3 supplement bridges this gap and stays true to plant-only principles.
Other nutrients
Calcium, zinc, magnesium, iodine, and choline round out the list of nutrients that vegans need to monitor consistently. While these are present in plant foods, their absorption can be affected by other compounds in those same foods. They, in turn, affect levels of nutrients of concern - for example, low stomach acid or low calcium levels can impact B12 levels, and a deficiency in magnesium, dietary fat, calcium, or vitamin K2 can reduce vitamin D levels. In some cases, supplementation may be necessary.

Daily Multi Essentials+® covers adults and teens, while Kid's Multi Essentials+® provides the same whole-foods-inspired approach for younger family members. Both are free from artificial colors, flavors, and animal-derived ingredients. If your family is looking for a single vegan multivitamin solution that works for all members and across age groups, this is a simple and practical option.
Iron: Flora Iron™ and Ferritin+®
Flora offers two separate approaches to vegan iron supplementation, both designed to help with the bioavailability challenges that make plant-based iron a genuine nutritional consideration.
- Flora Iron™ is a liquid iron supplement paired with a B-vitamin complex, which supports the formation of red blood cells and boosts energy levels.
- Ferritin+® takes a different approach with plant-based ferritin iron in a delayed-release capsule. Gentler on digestion, it is designed for steady, sustained absorption.
Together, they address different needs and preferences for vegan diets, which naturally lack iron.
Acerola Natural Vitamin C Powder and Red Beet Crystals
Two of the most nutrient-dense whole-food additions in Flora's vegan range.
A key pairing for vegan diets, Acerola cherry is among the richest plant sources of vitamin C. Flora's powder delivers it in a natural, additive-free format that supports the immune system and improves iron absorption.
Red Beet Crystals are an energizing superfood addition that functions as a natural nitric oxide booster. This compound is popular among active vegans looking for a daily performance and energy supplement rooted in whole-food nutrition.
FloraSil, Sambu®Guard, and Flor•Essence®
FloraSil provides plant-sourced silica for hair, skin, and nail support. It’s a vegan-friendly alternative to collagen-adjacent supplements that rely on animal-derived ingredients.
Sambu®Guard Elderberry+ delivers organic elderberry immune support in a liquid formula that's easy to take daily and effective.
And Flor•Essence® - in both its classic eight-herb liquid and Dry Tea Blend formats, as well as the Turkey Tail & Turmeric variant - offers whole-body cleansing support rooted in herbal tradition. Naturally, it is entirely free of animal products.
