Behind the Scenes with Flora’s BiologicVET® Pet Supplements

Flora is proud to offer BiologicVET® pet supplements formulated for the unique make up of cats and dogs. These formulas feature a high concentration of nutrients and active ingredients, an organic powder delivery system, are free from PCBs, heavy metals (like mercury) and dioxins and are made at our Canadian GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) certified facility.

Product Regulations

For the Canadian market BiologicVET products are regulated by Health Canada and are licensed under VHP (Veterinary Health Products) regulations. In the US, the FDA regulates label and manufacturing compliance for pet products.

The formulas are based on AAFCO's (Association of American Feed Control Officials) guidelines for vitamins and minerals for dogs and cats and Health Canada VHP (Veterinary Health Products) regulations.

AAFCO is a non-profit corporation that offers expertise in animal science, animal nutrition, feed label compliance, field operations for inspection staff and program administration.

Our US pet products are also approved by the NASC (National Animal Supplement Council), a non-profit trade association. A product with the NASC approved seal means it’s met strict guidelines for product quality assurance and labeling standards.

Meet the Formulators

Franco Cavaleri, BSc PhD Molecular Neuromedicine is a biochemist from UBC who worked with veterinarians in the Vancouver, BC, area to formulate the products with the help of nutrigenomics research into pet health and nutrition. The formulators have published well-researched articles in journals such as the Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research, as well as a book on canine health titled Potential Within: Your dog’s health, a Natural Guide to health, happiness and harmony for your canine companion.

Ken Cowan, our BiologicVET brand manager, also worked to update the formulas with Flora’s Quality Assurance department. Updates included using Flora’s organic flax and sunflower meal as the fiber base as well as adding bromelain to the BioSKIN&COAT formula and updating the sourcing of the BioFATS fish oil to Icelandic sources.

Currently, the BiologicVET line consists of four product formulas: BioVITES, BioSKIN&COAT, BioFATS, and BioJOINT. Stay tuned for future formulations as we aim to expand into other areas of pet health in the near future!
