Floradix® Formula: A Focus on B Vitamins

July 28, 2020

Our Floradix and Floravital Iron products use a well-absorbed, water soluble iron compound called ferrous gluconate. The formulas also include B vitamins for energy and to support red blood cell production. You can find vitamin B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B6 (pyridoxine) and B12 (cyanocobalamin) in the liquid versions. The Floradix Iron tablets also contain vitamin B3 (niacin) and folic acid.

B vitamins help convert food macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) into energy. Additionally, folic acid, B6 and B12 are needed for red blood cell production. Red blood cells contain hemoglobin (which itself contains iron), which transports oxygen throughout the body. Together, the B vitamins and iron help your energy levels and maintain healthy amounts of red blood cells.

We are sometimes asked about why Salus uses the cyanocobalamin form of B12. This form is economical, stable in liquid and converts into both active forms the body uses: methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. About 10-25% of the population may have some difficulty converting to these active forms due to MTHFR genetic mutations. Unfortunately switching to both these active forms would drive the cost of the product up quite a bit and disrupt worldwide distribution as the product would need to be re-registered in every country. For the majority of people, cyanocobalamin B12 offers the most advantages.

For optimal digestion and absorption, take Floradix on an empty stomach, 30 minutes before meals and keep it a couple of hours apart from medications and other multi-vitamin or mineral supplements as these can compete or interfere with absorption. Coffee, tea, wine and some foods (grains, legumes, seeds) can also reduce iron absorption. Vitamin C is not essential for absorption of ferrous gluconate but there’s no harm in taking some alongside Floradix – the formula does contain a little already too.

If you are low in any of these B vitamins or iron, you should start to feel better within 1 week to 1 month of daily, consistent use, depending on how low your levels are. Also, don’t forget to refrigerate the bottle after opening (liquid only)! Otherwise, you may end up with a science project growing in the bottle if it’s left unrefrigerated for too long.
