Get Glowing, Healthy Skin

Get Glowing, Healthy Skin

It’s all about beautiful skin from the inside out.

That’s right, I’m not talking about what to put on your skin but what to put inside your belly so you can create beautiful, glowing skin. That’s where really gorgeous skin comes from—from the inside out. The madness started about 40 years ago when the first dietary guidelines came down from the government. Their focus was to make Americans healthier, but 40 years later we’re actually more obese and have more chronic disease than we did back in the 1970s. The remnants of these recommendations are still being felt today, particularly regarding fat. Healthy diets are still very low in this very important macronutrient. And if you want beautiful, healthy, glowing, amazing skin—then enjoy more fat, fat, glorious fat. Do you have dry skin and need to use a lot of moisturizer? The solution is more fat (1 – 3 tbsp. per day) and lots more water. Are you finding your skin aging faster than you’d like? If so, do an oil change—exchange any processed fats for beautifully pressed oils or whole-food fats (I’ll tell you more about that in a minute, stay tuned). Is your skin still breaking out, even though teenage hormone issues are a distant memory? Then you may need more anti-inflammatory fat.

All fats aren’t equal

Fat is the ingredient your body uses to make inflammation AND anti-inflammatory factors, and these are incredibly important for your immune system. Fat is also a big part of our cell walls (including our skin cells) and the type of fat you eat equals the quality of your cell walls. Healthy fats = soft, supple cells. Hard, over-processed, or trans fat = hard, ridged cells.

Give your body an oil change

Very simply—fat does not like to be processed. The closer the fat/oil is to how it’s found naturally will make for a better source fat for the body. Here are some examples: Avocado – a truly whole-food fat. This is a beautiful source of skin-loving monounsaturated fats. It’s my favorite addition to lunch. Virgin Coconut Oil – Saturated fat has gotten an extra bad rap over the last 40 years, and happily, studies have found that this idea was 100% incorrect. Saturated fat is NOT harmful, and contains important fats like lauric acid, which strengthens the immune system. Udo’s Oil (US/CA) – a perfect fat symphony. This is a beautifully balanced, anti-inflammatory omega 3-6-9 oil, that also contains medium-chain triglycerides. Each seed has been delicately pressed in tiny presses, which gentle extract each oil. 1 – 2 tbsp. of this oil each day makes my skin glow! Fat is an important part of our diet, add more healthy fat and watch your skin thank you!
