Period Week

Written by guest blogger: Jill Anenberg Lawrence, Holistic Health and Nutrition Coach

Blood. Sweat. Tears. That combo means one thing, it’s period week!

We can also include random yelling, laughing, and binging on chocolate and episodes of The Housewives because somehow, all their drama calms the drama in our uterus. You’re not alone while riding the cotton cowboy and often we match cycles with friends. So sweet and so scary! So how do we save the people in our line of fire along with ourselves while the painters are in? I got you girl, as a Holistic Health Coach I’m sharing some healthy food and lifestyle tips up my wizard sleeve to get you thru this bloody hell. 1) Caffeinate. This is one of those times that caffeine is Aunt Flo’s best friend. Helps ease cramps, gives you energy to get your self-pitying ass off the couch, and coffee is also loaded with antioxidants. Hold off on the dairy though as it can trigger cramps and inhibit the absorption of iron. 2) Orgasm. Yep! Whether your partner is cool to fool around while it’s Arts & Crafts week at panty camp or you go at it alone, an orgasm can help relieve cramps and elevate your mood. Our body releases the feel good hormones, oxytocin and dopamine, which aren’t available over the counter, only between the sheets! Just make sure you’re not using your favorite 500 count Egyptian threads...it’s time to expand period panties to period sheets. 3) Popeye was onto something! Iron up baby! We lose a lot of iron when the kitty has a nose bleed—hence the burger cravings—leading to iron deficiency. It’s super important to eat high-iron foods or take a killer supplement. My go-to: Floradix Iron + Herbs (US/CA). It’s a liquid tonic making it easy to take and absorb. There’s no alcohol, artificial colors or flavors, parabens, or junk. While we’re on the rag we have no time for any of that crap. In addition, Floradix contains high levels of B12—think energy and other essential B vitamins important to blood formation. Instead of receiving flowers this week, you’re better off ingesting them. The proprietary blend of flowers, herbs, and vegetables will be way better off in your stomach than the dining room table. 4) If you’re reading this while PMS-ing please don’t hunt me down when I tell you to limit processed foods high in sugar and sodium. I promise you’ll love me after snacking on better choices like nuts/seeds, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. You’ll be less bloated and have fewer b!tch attacks from simple sugar racing through your body & causing sugar crashes. And PS—you look hot in your sweats! Join us for Period Week on our Facebook page for a week of info, funny tidbits, giveaways, chocolate, and a chat with Flora experts about all things menstruation! Event starts April 25th.
