Freshly pressed, unrefined oil is a nutritional addition to any healthy meal, providing valuable essential fatty acids from natural sources.
Wouldn't it be nice if all foods were freshly supplied – without stabilizers, preservatives or chemical additives? We at Flora have made a beginning with our natural oils – all fresh from the press, unmodified, full of the natural taste and goodness of the seeds.
At Flora, our oils are pressed from the finest grade certified organic seeds available. These superior oils are carefully extracted in a precisely controlled light and oxygen free environment to retain their authentic color, delicate flavor and primary nutritional characteristics. Then they are bottled in light resistant amber glass bottles, which are dated for freshness.
The Essential Difference
Unlike other commercially produced oils, Flora Oils are pressed in a light and oxygen free environment. They are then bottled in non-reactive dark brown glass bottles to prevent deterioration from light. The glass container has the further advantage of being impermeable to oxygen. As an additional protective measure, we use a nitrogen flush to ensure oxidation cannot occur, and that freshness and top quality are maintained. With all of these crucial, protective measures, Flora Oils can truly be called "Live Oils," rich in natural color with the surprisingly fresh and delicate flavor of the seeds. Freshly pressed oils are as vital as freshly squeezed juice and should be stored in the refrigerator or freezer to sustain their quality and shelf life.
We at Flora are dedicated to the protection of our environment, which includes supporting sustainable agriculture, organic and bio-dynamic farming, as well as helping non-profit organizations such as Greenpeace, Pollution Probe, Earthroots, and the American Botanical Council. Flora is a certified organic facility and in our commitment to your health, we will never sacrifice quality for profit or convenience.

Flax Oil is "nutritional gold", no doubt about that, but it must be freshly pressed and unrefined. Oil pressed from flax is incredibly rich in both omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids. Until very recently, this incredible freshly pressed flax oil was not produced in North America and had to be imported.
However, the evolution of Flora's highly sophisticated oil pressing plant allows the production of fresh, cold pressed flax oil, which is unrefined, non-deodorized and pressed from certified organically grown flax. During pressing of this oil, the temperature remains below 40 C. This gives our oil a surprisingly delightful, fresh, nutty taste. Because of Flax Oil's superior nutritional make-up, we recommend it always be used unheated.

Sunflower Oil (Certified Organic, GMO free)
|
For centuries, sunflower seeds have played a significant role in human nutrition, as they are the source of a highly nutritious and valuable food oil. Hulled seeds contain up to 60% oil, which on average is 88% unsaturated. Natural sunflower seed oil, cold-pressed and unrefined has a light yellow to rich golden colour depending on the seed.
Flora sunflower oil is an all-Canadian product made from organically grown, sun-ripened seeds. Flora's unique cold pressing method does not exceed 45 C. Therefore, Flora sunflower oil has the natural flavour of the seeds; pleasant and nutty. It is rich in vitamin E, which is not removed. Slight cloudiness of unrefined sunflower seed oil is a sign of highest quality.

Flora Certified Organic Canola Oil is the most nutritious, valuable oil that can be pressed from a hybrid of a rapeseed. Only Flora Canola Oil stands as a truly cold pressed canola oil, unrefined and unmodified. This is the most significant difference between other canola oils, which are usually extracted chemically with solvents such as hexane. Flora unrefined canola oil is somewhat darker in colour than the refined product and bears a much richer flavour.

Not all pumpkin seeds are suitable for oil pressing; the species predominantly used for Flora Pumpkin Seed Oil are cucurbita stilbo and cucurbita maxima, both of which are grown in pesticide free areas of Austria and Hungary. Pumpkin seeds produce dark green yet excellent tasting oil. The unique Flora method of cold pressing retains the original rich flavor of pumpkin seeds and the dark color of the natural unrefined oil signifies a high content of chlorophyll. Flora Pumpkin Seed Oil has a high content of both the essential fatty acids. The balance is made up of monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids. This makes it a comparatively stable but highly nutritious and valuable oil. Flora Pumpkin Seed Oil lends a delicate flavor to all kinds of salads, especially green leaf and potato salads. |

Sesame Oil (Certified Organic, GMO free)
|
The tiny seeds of sesame have been known as a source of food oil for over 4,000 years in many Asian countries. Today, sesame seeds are popular all over the world, providing nutritious snacks and tasty oils. Unfortunately, in industrialized countries, Sesame Oil is mostly produced in vast quantities in what is called a chemical extraction method, using hexane, bleaching, refining, and deodorizing, which result in a bland and tasteless oil. In contrast, Flora Sesame Oil is a truly cold pressed oil, pressed at temperatures below 45oC with the taste of sun-ripened sesame seeds. Sesame seeds contain the natural preservatives known as sesamol and sasamolin. When refrigerated, Flora Sesame Oil will partially solidify, which shows that it has a high percentage of monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids. This makes Sesame Oil more stable with a longer shelf life. |

After this preparation, the toasted seeds are cols pressed in the same manner as our other Flora oils. Toasting the sprouted seeds gives Flora toasted sesame Seed Oil that desirable flavour which enhances Oriental dishes, soups and salads.

Sesame seeds contain the natural preservatives known as sesamol and sesamolin. When refrigerated, Flora Sesame Oil will partially solidify, which shows that it has a high percentage of mono-unsaturated (37% Oleic) and saturated (11% Palmitic) fatty acids. This makes sesame oil more stable with a longer shelf life.
Serving Suggestions:
Toasted sesame oil has a pleasant nutty flavour and is nutritionally preferred by many for sautéing, stir-frying and baking. When used for deep frying it is advisable to heat the oil gradually to prevent foaming.

The Oil Story:
Oil has been an indispensable ingredient in the cooking habits of most cultures throughout history, as well as in modern kitchens. In the light of current medical advice, decisive purchasing has never been more important. What complicates matters are the conflicting advertising messages given, most of them misleading. One brand promises "no cholesterol", and another "made from 100% corn oil", as if these were important points. Yet the real issues at stake are never mentioned at all. We would like to make one point clear: No vegetable oil contains cholesterol; neither does peanut butter or coconut butter. Cholesterol is found only in animal fat, and is produced by the body when fat intake is out of balance.
From a health food point of view, there is really only one aspect to be considered. Is the food to be consumed fresh in nature or is it dead and preserved? Are oils freshly pressed and unrefined or are they adulterated, refined, bleached, hydrogenated and heat-treated?
Nowadays, most supermarket cooking oils are produced "en masse" in large factories. They are chemically refined for more stability and longer shelf life, and are pale in color, and bland in taste. Most of them lack both essential fatty acids, linoleic (omega 6) and linolenic (omega 3). Yet, nutritional science has established a definite need for these fatty acids in the life process, as they are partially metabolized into prostaglandin, essential hormone-like substances. Both Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids are required by our cells for a variety of important functions.
Flora Oils are truly cold pressed, unrefined and unmodified. Most seeds used in our oil pressing are grown organically by Canadian and U.S. farmers. The seeds are selected for their high quality and abundance of essential fatty acids. When Flora developed their cold pressing techniques in 1984, they became the first North American manufacturer of truly cold pressed and unrefined oils. The oils are actually pressed on a smaller scale as was done hundreds of years ago with one exception: They are produced under total absence of light and oxygen on small but highly sophisticated oil presses, where friction heat is kept well below 118 F (50 C) to produce a truly cold pressed oil.
