Flora was created in the 1960s, but the company's roots stretch back to the early part of the century in southern Germany. It was there that Dr. Otto Greither, the grandfather to Flora's Founder Thomas Greither, laid the foundations for a prominent health food manufacturer.
In 1910, Dr. Greither was planning to open his own sanitorium, but was overcome by a severe illness. Instead of resigning himself to an operation by his attending physician, he followed the advise of a visiting nurse and successfully treated his condition with herbal infusions. He subsequently devoted his life to the discovery, production and distribution of natural health care products.
In 1916, Dr. Greither founded Salus Haus ("Health House") which has since become one of the most highly respected herbal companies in the world.
The first health food shop was established by Dr. Greither in 1923 to inform and offer the public natural health alternatives. |
Salus Haus was completely destroyed during World War II, but was quickly rebuilt by Dr. Greither's son, Otto Greither, who currently oversees the company in Bruckmühl, Germany. Salus Haus is now a leading manufacturer of medicinal teas, tinctures, and tablets, as well as the therapeutic liquid tonics packaged under the Salus Floradix label.
From the selection of raw material to the final stages of product production, their stringent quality standards and leading edge technology have earned Salus Haus recognition as one of the most respected leaders in the field of phytotherapy. The laboratories not only accommodate a team of expert scientists, but house a range of the most highly advanced equipment available, from the familiar electron microscope to a variety of high-tech computerized instruments, including a Plasma Spectrometer for simultaneous element analysis. Over the past decades the achievements of Salus Haus have been extraordinary, and their herbal products are now available worldwide.
Dr. Dünner is another major manufacturer of outstanding herbal products. It is owned and operated by Peter Greither, the brother of Thomas Greither. The prestigious facilities located in Kirchberg, Switzerland produce a variety of phytopharmaceutical remedies and biologically based cosmetics.
Linked to nature, Dr. Dünner focuses on preparing products primarily based on organically grown plant material to ensure the finest formulas available. The Sambu Elderberry Cleansing Program and Pagosid Devil's Claw Root Extract are two of their most popular items presently distributed by Flora in North America.

Seeds of Growth:
Flora was established in 1965 and is currently owned by Thomas Greither. Originally, he operated a natural foods store in Burlington, Vermont, and it was his dream to produce and provide consumers with the finest natural health products available.
In its early stages, Flora served primary as a center for distributing and marketing European herbal remedies. At that time alternative health products were virtually unknown in Canada. |
As interest grew, Flora began manufacturing natural bulk laxatives and its own line of herbal therapeutic teas. These teas were the first of their kind to be prepared in Canada and their popularity soon blossomed.
In 1986 Flora resumed its role as a pioneer when it produced the first truly cold-pressed, unrefined oils for medicinal use and food preparation. A unique manufacturing method eliminates any light or oxygen and allows the enzymes in the seed matter to be processed at body temperature and the essential fatty acids remain active. |
In June, 1992, in cooperation with Elaine Alexander, Flora began preparing and distributing the powerful detoxifying herbal formula known as Flor•Essence. This unique eight herb formula, used for generations by the Ojibway Natives, was passed to Rene Caisse and through her partner Dr. Charles Brusch to Elaine Alexander, who contracted Flora to produce and market the formula. Its popular effect in preventing or eliminating a host of chronic conditions has rapidly spread throughout the herbal community.

Flora has evolved into one of North America's premier natural health products companies. The Canadian head office and main manufacturing facility has expanded to over 40,000 square feet. Located alongside the picturesque banks of the Fraser River in Burnaby, British Columbia, it provides and ideal living environment for a growing number of dedicated employees.

Expanding to USA & International:
Flora's expansion into the U.S. marketplace took place as recently as 1988. Originally, a small space was rented in Lynden, Washington, and only four employees oversaw the production and shipment of fresh organic flax oil. New products were gradually added, an independent sales team was hired, and by mid 1994 Flora was ready to burst at the seams.
The rented building was purchased in 1995 and fully transformed into a gleaming, state-of-the-art office and production center. This 22,000 square foot facility is situated on 5 acres of land surrounded by a golf course and sprawling emerald farms.
In the same year Flora acquired the exclusive distribution rights to Salus Haus formulas from Germany. Product excellence speaks for itself, and consumer interest echoed from all corners of the globe. A burgeoning export department has responded to requests from many international importers. Through friendly and diligent networking Flora's top selling health care products have successfully reached many foreign markets.
With an ever expanding export capability Flora is today supplying markets throughout North America, Europe and Asia with first quality herbal products and helping to educate consumers around the world in the benefits of organic herbal remedies and supplements.

The organic nutritional supplements that are prepared and distributed for you by Flora are guaranteed to be top quality and chemical free, right from the seed that is planted, to the harvest, and from the post-harvest facilities to the final production and packaging.
Only select farmers who do their own seed collecting, growing, harvesting and drying provide seeds and herbs for Flora. After each harvest, a sample is sent for us to test for quality and potency and only the choicest products are accepted. The herbs and seeds quarantined in the freezer, or at room temperature, depending on what is best for the individual product and its active ingredients and from there they are tested again. If they pass they are then sorted, cut, and put through a sieve and metal detector if necessary. At any time, if the herbs or seeds do not meet our high standards for quality and potency they are rejected and the whole process starts again.
The products that do make it through these procedures without being rejected are then ready for production and packaging. We have the capability for encapsulation, bottling, tea bagging, bulk packing, oil pressing in a heat, light and oxygen reduced environment, non-alcohol herbal extraction, herbal extraction for tonics and tinctures, and formulation and production of body and skincare products. Stringent quality control testing occurs at each stage of production for everything we manufacture.
When we package our nutritional supplements we use only the most environmentally friendly, safe and non-reactive packaging available. For example all of our oils and supplements are packaged in non-reactive, dark brown recyclable glass bottles that have been nitrogen flushed and kept free of light and oxygen whenever necessary.
The current production plant includes sophisticated semi-automatic and fully automatic equipment for processing quality herbal teas and tonics, encapsulating herbal extracts and cold-pressing certified organic seeds into health benefiting oils. Flora's ongoing research and development has resulted in some production methods which are the finest in the world.
Our commitment to preserving the quality and potency of the raw materials we receive is foremost in our manufacturing practices. We guarantee top quality, chemical-free nutritional supplements from the farmer to you.

Quality Assurance & Certification:
All of Flora's products are manufactured in accordance with GMP standards, and the facilities and manufacturing procedures are in compliance with all regulatory agencies in Canada and the United States, including the Health Protection Branch (HPB) in Canada and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the USA. |
In addition, Flora is a Certified Organic Producer and Processor overseen by the third party certifying agency, Quality Assurance International (QAI). This means that the organic herbal remedies prepared and distributed by Flora are guaranteed top quality and chemical free, right from the seed that is planted to the harvest, and from the post-harvest facilities to the final production and packaging.

To ensure quality firsthand, Flora seeks out and purchases herbs in their most whole form possible. Many herbs are available on the market in finely cut and ground forms so that it is very difficult to determine the purity, potency and freshness of the herbs. Powdered herbs are less expensive, but that is not what Flora is interested in.
The Quality Control Department inspects each shipment of herbs, and tests are performed to assure all plant material and finished products meet their specifications for quality. Physical identification data, microbial, heavy metal and pesticide residue standards, as well as minimum active ingredient levels must all be met using the most advanced computer testing equipment. |
Flora has been honored with numerous awards for its products and is a registered member of the Tru-Label Program in the United States. The company continually strives to remain a leader in the field of natural health by remaining committed to its mandate of offering only supreme quality products.

Flora is dedicated to preserving the environment and in utilizing production and packaging practices that are ecologically sound.
Flora also purchased prime farmland for cultivating and testing a variety of certified organic herbs under the Washington State Department of Agriculture Organic Food Certification Program. This will guarantee an ever available supply of raw plant material that meets the company's stringent standards of purity and optimal active ingredients

Working toward preserving and protecting our planet.
The company is also contracting and cooperating with local organic farmers to grow many herbs under strict guidelines. Qualified staff work closely with farmers to ensure proper seed selection, cultivation and harvesting methods are utilized. |
Flora was created in the 1960s, but the company's roots stretch back to the early part of the century in southern Germany. It was there that Dr. Otto Greither, the grandfather to Flora's Founder Thomas Greither, laid the foundations for a prominent health food manufacturer.
Flora is proud to offer financial support to over 30 nonprofit organizations to assist in the continued protection and preservation of our planet.
The best possible materials for product manufacturing and packaging are continuously sought after. Vegicaps vegetarian capsules are used in lieu of gelatin for all of our dry herbal extracts. We also select recyclable amber glass bottles rather than plastic.
To ensure consumer protection and safety, Flora will continue to use environmentally friendly glass bottles for packaging its herbal tonics, encapsulated herbs and organic oils. Even the company trucks run on natural gas to minimize pollution.
All production areas utilize filtered air and special quartz flooring materials which are superior to tile or painted flooring.
For packing orders, Flora prefers an ecologically safe material naturally made from starch. This new and revolutionary loose fill packaging material dissolves instantly in water, leaving no toxic residues. It is 100 percent biodegradable and may be discarded, composted in the garden, or simply washed down the drain.
