Modified Citrus Pectin Enhances the Immune System
It is generally agreed that diets may influence the development of illnesses in human populations.Scientists in Denmark have recently discovered a common substance in fruits and vegetables which provides much promise for the human body's fight against disease.
The substance is known as pectin – an ordinary polysaccharide found in all fruits and vegetables. Pectin works like a natural biochemical signal, a hormone-like substance which activates the white blood cells of the immune system.
All fruits and vegetables contain pectins in different forms and structures but one pectin has a very special structure. This is a pectin from citrus fruits. When the enzyme in a ripe citrus fruit changes the molecular structure of a very long-chained pectin, it creates a new modified form of pectin. This is the substance which can attack invading cells against spreading in the body.
The Need for More Pectin
Pectin has been a part of our diet since the origin of man, but as a result of refined foods the pectin content of our diet has decreased. It is estimated that we only get around 50 percent of the pectin that we used to before the industrial revolution.
Research confirms the need for more fruits and vegetables in the American diet. Those who eat fewer than six servings of fruits and vegetables could benefit from supplementing their diets with a modified citrus pectin.
Scientists behind the recent discoveries even go as far as to say that their ultimate goal is that every man and woman should take modified citrus pectin in some form daily from the age of 30.
