Butterbur
Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) has a long and successful history in medicinal herbal therapy, dating back to 100 AD. The extract from the roots was traditionally used to relieve inflammation due to fevers, headaches and respiratory conditions. Encouraged by butterbur's historical success with inflammatory conditions, researchers are now discovering many of the plant's therapeutic properties for a modern health concern: seasonal allergic rhinitis.
Tormented by pollen? you're not alone.
Millions of Canadians are too familiar with the discomforts of the allergy season. Beginning in February and continuing on until November, seasonal allergic rhinitis is a collection of symptoms, predominantly in the nose and eyes, in people who are allergic to airborne particles of dust, dander, or the pollens of seasonal plants. Historically, these symptoms were most prevalent during haying season (hence the term "hay fever").
Tiny, hardly visible pollens are the main culprits of seasonal distress. Although pollen is harmless, a sensitive immune system considers it a threat. The body's natural reaction is to activate antibodies; these bind to histamine, which contributes to an inflammatory response. The end result: a flare-up of sneezing, itching, coughing, irritated eyes and obstruction of nasal passages. Tired of waking up exhausted with congested sinuses and aching heads, many people are seeking a natural solution.
How does it work?
Allernon contains Petadolex®, a high quality extract made from organically grown butterbur. Two particular compounds in the extract, petasin and isopetasin, are believed to have an anti-spasmodic action, working to soothe inflammation of smooth muscle tissue (as found in the brain, sinus cavity, lungs, GI tract and uterus). The end result is a soothing effect on smooth muscle tissue that, in addition to reducing the symptoms of seasonal allergies, also helps reduce migraine frequency.
Clinical trials show speedy improvement!
Recent studies in allergic rhinitis conclude that Petadolex®, containing 15% petasin and isopetasin, can significantly reduce the symptoms of seasonal allergies. In one study, 90% of patients reported significant relief of seasonal allergy symptoms within two weeks. Efficacy, tolerability, and improvement in quality of life were positively rated by 80%, 92%, and 80% of patients, respectively.
Relief without bothersome side effects
Naturally, Allernon is a welcome remedy for symptoms associated with hypersensitivity to seasonal allergies. An added benefit of Allernon is that in reducing the discomfort of seasonal allergies, it does not produce the limiting side effects of drowsiness, fatigue or headache. Within a few short weeks of using Allernon, symptoms diminish and you can fully enjoy the season again.
Safety and efficacy assured
The butterbur plant in its natural state contains components called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) that can be disruptive to organ tissue linings (the liver in particular). The butterbur in Allernon has undergone a patented extraction method that removes the harmful PAs while guaranteeing a therapeutic level (15%) of petasin and isopetasin.
The removal of these dangerous alkaloids is possible only with a liquid extraction method. In order to achieve maximum safety and optimal absorption, Allernon (Petadolex®) is made with a critical fluid CO2 extraction. The extract is then third-party tested to ensure the absence of detectable PAs – and a 0% risk of liver toxicity.
How to take it
In 25 years of research and clinical trials, no serious side effects with Petadolex® have been reported. Thus, Allernon is suitable for long-term use to alleviate symptoms associated with hypersensitive reactions to environmental allergens. Just take one capsule, two to three times daily throughout the hay fever season.
