We know that supplements are only effective if they are well absorbed by the body. Dried herbs (in tablets or capsules) tend to be poorly assimilated; liquids are preferred because the active constituents are already in solution and pass quickly into the bloodstream where they can be utilized. But which liquid to choose?
There are 3 general methods of liquid extraction: infusions (flowers and leaves) or decoctions (bark, roots and berries) are also referred to as "herbal teas"; tinctures are extracts of dried or fresh herb in a water/alcohol or water/glycerin base; and herbal juices are just that: the juices expressed from fresh plants.
Infusions and decoctions are best taken as tonics over an extended period of time. Only watersoluble compounds are extracted using this "tea" method, so it is not suitable for all plants or even for all parts of a given plant. The alcohol in tinctures gives them a long shelf life and extracts more constituents than teas; however, alcohol is a deterrent for many people. |
